Introduction: Toxic Feminism
Hello, apples, today I will be talking about my unit 2 project which is about pop culture and its significance to the world and during this project we have been learning all sorts of skills like how to do an analysis, research, and thesis. Also, how to find a secondary source and do citation.
The topic I have chosen is.... Snow White. I know it is very controversial but that’s why I have chosen it because it interests me. I specifically wanted to look at toxic feminism, which is questionable, but I do believe that is how people interpret these modern twists especially how Rachel Zegler said “...she’s not gonna be dreaming about true love, she’s dreaming about becoming a leader...” It is as if saying she can’t be a leader and have true love which in this case wanting a prince. This creates a scenario that we don’t need men. This idea could be interpreted as women are better than men which is toxic feminism. This is important because we don’t want our girls thinking they are better than men. We don’t want them to not go into relationships because they think they will value less if they depend on a man. But in reality, we do depend on a man. We have fathers, brothers, uncles, teachers and many more that teach us valuable things. There is no shame in relying on someone. But these Disney movies are going towards a direction where iconic movie's live actions are all portraying the same message.
Anyway, I will go deeper into toxic feminism in my next post.
When looking into my topic I have realized some basic information such as Snow white was originally by Brothers Grim who were German and created this in 1812. It was called: Sneewittchen. Walt took that and put his input and created The Snow White and seven dwarfs. Did you know it was the first animated film and was considered a flop when making it? It was even called: Disney’s “folly”. Enough about that during 1937 married women gained the right to vote meaning they have their voice and not the husbands. That sense of freedom was developing during that period. During this time the great depression happened, and it was in the middle of World Warr 1 and 2. People who were suffering from this depression went towards entertainment to avoid the reality. I also want to talk about the 4 stages of feminism and how they evolved and what exactly led to the current situation we are facing today. Anyway, I hope you all have good time! Bye, apples!!
Disney, Snow white, October 27, 2023, Disney Burbank, Buena Speaks, https://buenaspeaks.org/7512/features/new-live-action-snow-white-sparks-controversy/ Accessed, 14 November 2023
I completely agree with the ideas shown in this blog post. I think it’s a very effective story Snow White is a beautiful story that holds a special place in the hearts of many young and old generations. It represents the nostalgic moments of fairy tale stories and has been a meaningful part of childhood memories for so many. However it is important to recognize that times have changed, and it is about time that Disney portrays true feminism in their stories. True feminism is not about belittling or dismissing the desires of women who aspire to be leaders or those who dream of finding a charming prince. It is about acknowledging and respecting everyone's wishes and choices. it is crucial to teach young boys and girls the importance of consent, communication, and equality. By reimagining Snow White's story and incorporating these values, Disney can empower young minds and emphasize the idea that every individual has the right to make their own decisions, Let's hope that Disney takes this opportunity to redefine the narrative and continue to create stories that align with the audiences and the modern time.
