Reflection: Snow White the Modern Girl
I had two topics in mind for this Unit Project. I either wanted to do the concept of fetishizing East Asian features that developed with the rise of K-pop, or something related to Disney because there was a lot of drama around them. When looking into Disney, I found Snow White. This topic was interesting because it felt like the interviews were directed towards toxic feminism. I do not consider myself to be a feminist because it goes against my core beliefs. However, I am still interested because we live in a world where women are sexualized and objectified through media. When I saw Rachael Ziegler’s interview with Variety. I realized that Snow White was going towards girl boss vibes which is incredible but that’s not Snow White.
During this project, I didn’t have a timeframe other than what the teacher gave us. I am someone who loves to do it at the very last minute, not during class though because that is way too stressful. I did get stuck during my secondary source. I found this document related to feminism and witches but there wasn’t a credible Aurther. It did feel like a student’s paper because it was double spaced and popped up like a pdf.
The other thing I had trouble with was the blogging websites. I tried Wix first, but I got confused with the AI technology and it wasn’t something I was looking for. I just went with Blogger.com and made tons of mistakes such as the URL code says, True love. And I want to change that but when I do that the website itself doesn’t work which is worse.
It was simple to create the blog but hard to design it. I had to watch a couple of videos and I still didn’t understand how to use the layout. But the worst thing was when I uploaded the blog and realized it looked like a document. I have no idea how to not make it look like a document. And it was too late for me to look at a different website. Also, during the writing process, it was hard to be neutral because I automatically tried going to my biases. But I feel that made it not causal tone. I did try making it mostly informational with my historical context. But overall, the blogging experience was unique. I am glad it wasn’t an essay but rather a more creative form where I was able to experiment.
I am still annoyed that my blog looks that way because I was really into the aesthetic of Hand Luggage Only by Yaya and Lloyd. The font was playful, and it was this bubbly bold writing that caught my attention. I also realized that all the photos had this saturated beige tone in the photos to match the vibes of the beige-themed blog. I wanted to do something similar. Firstly, Hand Luggage Only was such an awesome name. I thought of Red Apples which sounds cringy, but it has good meaning. I was doing Toxie Feminism. We know the apple was poisonous in the movie so toxic. Maybe I should have thought about it more and played with the wording. Also, I tried matching my theme with black and this mysterious feeling and hints of orange which pops.
Now that I look back, I want to change a lot of things. The blog website or understand the technology and perhaps look for an even better explanation. I want to change my tone because it doesn’t feel like how I would talk with friends and work on my thesis. I want to somehow balance my work because I didn’t go deep into my secondary source. After all, there was a lot of information, but I didn’t want to cut out my background knowledge. I also wanted to talk more about W.I.T.C.H. and put some examples of it like from Mulan. Anyway, hopefully, this gives more insight into how my blog post worked!!
